Hearty Grilled Cheese

2 slices of bread, any flavor (rye, sourdough, whole wheat), large slices

Butter, softened

1 slice cheddar cheese

1 slice Muenster or other mild cheese

1 thick or 2 thin slices of turkey or ham, sweet or salty

2 strips of bacon, cut in half (optional)

2 thin slices of ripe tomato (optional)


  1. Heat pan over medium heat
  2. Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread
  3. Place the first slice of bread into the hot pan, butter side down, then layer with 1 slice of cheese, then meat, tomato, and bacon, then final slice of cheese
  4. Top with second slice of bread, butter side up (add mustard to this slice as well if you are a mustard fan)
  5. When the bottom is golden brown, flip the sandwich (usually about 2-3 min)
  6. When second side is golden brown and cheese is melted, remove from heat and serve immediately
